I did my “Maternity and Child Sleep Consultant” course and certification through the International Maternity and Parenting Institute (IMPI), from California. I chose them because of their holistic approach, their “NON-one-size-fits-all” approach, and their perspective of “sleep as a natural function of the human body that does not need to be taught or trained”. To certify, I worked with many families with children from 0 to 5 years old. I must say I LOVE being a Holistic Sleep Consultant who works with gentle strategies, always focused on the emotional well-being of the child and family.
Here is a bit more about the school so that you understand better my work as a Sleep Consultant:
“At IMPI, our focus is on the holistic approach to establishing healthy sleep habits for families. Child sleep is a family sleep issue. By examining the entire context for sleep – the physical, emotional, social, developmental and environmental factors – we teach sleep consultants how to begin working with sleep during pregnancy, during infancy and beyond. Consultants assess the family, not just the child sleep problem, and make adjustments to sleep that are responsive to the family’s needs.
It’s a matter of addressing the things that are interfering with the body’s natural rhythms, homeostasis and inviting a lifestyle for the whole family that supports sleep.
We investigate and address imbalances in optimal human function (physical, mental, emotional) and external forces (social, cultural, environmental) that inhibit sleep and may lead to adult and child sleep challenges.
Our method combines Holistic Thinking and Application with the Scientific Method to provide long term and balanced solutions to adult and child sleep challenges.
We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach to sleep consulting. We consider sleep training one possible solution, but have found, in many cases, it may not even be necessary if the right holistic foundations have been established first. Most of all, we have learned that by emphasizing the foundations for healthy sleep, we address the sleep needs for the family with a minimum of frustration for both parents and children. “
