Most (if not all) new parents go through a period of sleep deprivation. For some it will last a month or two, for others it may last longer. But it surely doesn’t need to last many months or years. Sleep deprivation can have huge impacts on your health and on your child’s development.

It’s possible to have a healthy sleep when you have a baby, always respecting the needs and the developmental stage of the baby.

With focus on the emotional well-being of the baby/child and the family in general, and applying a holistic perspective, the Sleep Consultancy that I provide is different from other baby sleep consultants from New Zealand. I don’t do any 3-day promises. I assess with you the entire context – the physical, emotional, social, developmental and environmental factors that can affect sleep. Our consultancy is a respectful and gentle process, through which families will learn the foundations of sleep (information with scientific evidence) and strategies – temperament and age appropriated – to communicate the changes to the child and then to gradually start creating new habits where it’s necessary and where families choose to do so.


It’s important to say that Motherly Hug’s consultancy process doesn’t require sleep training methods, even though occasionally a gentle method (no cry-it-out or controlled crying) might suit a specific family (I really tend towards no methods at all). Most challenging situations are overcome with adjustments to the routine or environment, that is, through working with sleep foundations (also called “sleep hygiene”), and with attention to the emotional and physical needs of the child.

My work as a Sleep Consultant is like my work as a Postpartum Doula – I respect your choices, I don’t judge you, and through information and support I’ll guide you towards the healthy sleep your family needs.


First we will have a 10-15 minute conversation so that I see if your situation is one I can help you with, and for you to know more about the process. This is totally free, of course. We will also make sure – through your doctor – that your child doesn’t suffer from any sleep disorder and is healthy.

If then you decide to hire me, I’ll send you the contract and a complete questionnaire through which I’ll get to know more about your family dynamics, your philosophy, your challenges, your child.

Once I receive the questionnaire with the answers, we will set up a time for us to have a video call (can last up to 2 hours), most preferably with both parents together, for us to talk about everything that can interfere with sleep and about strategies that can be helpful to your circumstances. With your choices made, within the next 48 hours I’ll send you a personalised Sleep Plan containing everything (and more) we talked about in our meeting.

Practice + follow-up

Then, it’s time to put our plan into practice! The follow-up of the consultant throughout the process is key for the success of the plan! As I don’t believe in only one-week follow-ups (as in one week things are just starting to happen, let’s be honest!), I’ll be with you for 30, 60 or 90 days (again your choice – see our packages). Through your daily (or almost daily) updates to me, I’ll be able to adjust the plan with you when needed, and to bring up more ideas depending on how things are going.

By the end of our process, you will be a sleep expert, and you will have knowledge and tools to deal with future sleep challenges! It will all be so worth it!

In this package, I’ll help you understand the sleep of a newborn, I’ll give you strategies to understand their cries and meet their needs (Dr. Karp’s 5s, use of sling/carriers, establishing little routines in certain times of the day, among others), I’ll share with you how and when you can start creating good sleep habits (what will prevent sleep challenges in the future – we’ll talk about them too), I will show you there’s no such a thing as a newborn sleeping through the night, but that it’s still possible to have a healthy sleep. You may feel tired when you have a newborn as it’s normal for them to wake up several times overnight, but with my tips you won’t be exhausted!
