Most (if not all) new parents go through a period of sleep deprivation. For some it will last a month or two, for others it may last longer. But it surely doesn’t need to last many months or years. Sleep deprivation can have huge impacts on your health and on your child’s development.

It’s possible to have a healthy sleep when you have a baby, always respecting the needs and the developmental stage of the baby.

Motherly Hug now offers a Holistic Maternity and Child Sleep Consultant service to help you deal with sleep challenges such as: frequent overnight wakings, daily naps that are not happening, battle before sleep, early risers, transition from shared bed to own cot/bed, transition from parents’ room to own room…

OUR FOCUS

With focus on the emotional well-being of the baby/child and the family in general, and applying a holistic perspective, the Sleep Consultancy that I provide is different from other baby sleep consultants from New Zealand. I don’t do any 3-day promises. I assess with you the entire context – the physical, emotional, social, developmental and environmental factors that can affect sleep. Our consultancy is a respectful and gentle process, through which families will learn the foundations of sleep (information with scientific evidence) and strategies – temperament and age appropriated – to communicate the changes to the child and then to gradually start creating new habits where it’s necessary and where families choose to do so.

SLEEP CONSULTANT IS NOT SLEEP TRAINER

It’s important to say that not every consultancy process requires sleep training methods (I tend towards no methods at all). Sleep training, which anyway is not letting a baby cry alone, is just one of the tools we can work with as a Sleep Consultant, after everything else is in place, and always with gentle methods (no cry-it-out or controlled crying). Many challenging situations are overcome with adjustments to the routine or environment, that is, through working with sleep foundations (also called “sleep hygiene”), and with attention to the emotional and physical needs of the child.

My work as a Sleep Consultant is like my work as a Postpartum Doula – I respect your choices, I don’t judge you, and through information and support I’ll guide you towards the healthy sleep your family needs.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First we will have a 10-15 minute conversation so that I see if your situation is one I can help you with, and for you to know more about the process. This is totally free, of course. We will also make sure – through your doctor – that your child doesn’t suffer from any sleep disorder and is healthy.

If then you decide to hire me, I’ll send you the contract and a complete questionnaire through which I’ll get to know more about your family dynamics, your philosophy, your challenges, your child.

Once I receive the questionnaire with the answers, we will set up a time for us to have a video call (can last up to 2 hours), most preferably with both parents together, for us to talk about everything that can interfere with sleep and about strategies that can be helpful to your circumstances. With your choices made, within the next 48 hours I’ll send you a personalised Sleep Plan containing everything (and more) we talked about in our meeting.

Practice + follow-up

Then, it’s time to put our plan into practice! The follow-up of the consultant throughout the process is key for the success of the plan! As I don’t believe in only one-week follow-ups (as in one week things are just starting to happen, let’s be honest!), I’ll be with you for 30, 60 or 90 days (again your choice – see our packages). Through your daily (or almost daily) updates to me, I’ll be able to adjust the plan with you when needed, and to bring up more ideas depending on how things are going.

By the end of our process, you will be a sleep expert, and you will have knowledge and tools to deal with future sleep challenges! It will all be so worth it!

What clients are saying

“I’m so grateful we had the opportunity to meet and work with Dulce and I would definitely recommend her to any parent willing to improve the sleep habits of their kids. Dulce helped us with our 20 months old son who had never been a good sleeper. When we met her, our kid used to wake up every 2-3 hours asking for a bottle, almost like a newborn. Dulce helped us in every aspect of our kid’s life, looking at his nutrition, family time spent together, naps and night sleep. I felt I could totally trust her advice and she was there with us in every single step of the process. She enjoys working through gentle steps that allowed our kid and family to get used to the new routine with no stress.
She provided us with a clear and practical plan totally customised on our needs and we saw huge improvements very soon. I can’t be grateful enough to Dulce as she really changed our life bringing sanity and harmony back after months and months of sleep deprivation. If I had a second child I wouldn’t wait 20 months to call Dulce, I would call her way earlier.”

(Valentina Paladini, mother of one, Wellington/NZ)

“I need to thank Dulce for all her help with our son after many months of sleep deprivation. When my partner and me met Dulce we were under a lot of pressure due to the difficulty of having our first baby and the lack of sleep over an extended period of time. Our son had a big belly due to the excessive amount of milk that he used to drink per day, he used to watch tv/ipad during every meal and he used to wake up at least 2/3 times per night expecting to sleep on our bed after a big bottle of milk each time. Dulce provided us with a very practical customized plan that helped us to improve our son’s sleep step by step. The improvements were clear from the beginning. She was available every day to help us through the process. If I could go back in time, I would call her a lot earlier.”
(Danilo Moretti, father of one, Wellington/NZ)

“Our experience with our sleep consultant Dulce was awesome!!! Thanks to her advice and to her constant “being there for us”, we were able to make our 1-year-old baby sleep much longer, without waking up many times every night! We now have a routine for his naps and sleeps, and he’s much happier and rested. And of course our quality of life improved soooo much!!!”
(Laura Occhiena, mother of one, Wellington/NZ)

Amidst so many changes and the enchantment of becoming parents for the first time, we found ourselves trying to do our best for our baby. There is a whole world of discoveries to come. At that moment questions and doubts arise. Having Dulce’s support was essential for those doubts and questions not to become guilt and uncertainties. For our family, all the support and knowledge learned from Dulce made the difference, such as showing us the importance of establishing a flexible routine for the baby, understanding about sleep windows, learning to recognise the signs baby gives when she’s tired, hungry or sleepy. After putting the recommendations into practice, we came to understand various situations and behaviors of our baby. This gave us an injection of courage and the assurance that everything would be all right.
I am very grateful to Dulce/Motherly Hug for providing us all with more understanding, comprehension and quality of life so that we can focus on being better people and strengthening family ties.

(Vanessa Lage, mother of one, Wellington/NZ)
